· Overview

The Salomon ADV Skin 12 is a mainstay in the competitive trail running vest category, and for good reason. Designed for ultra-distance events, multi-stage races, and long self-supported runs, this 12-liter pack strikes a precise balance between storage capacity and minimalist carry. At 195 grams for the vest itself (excluding flasks), it competes directly with the lightest vests in its class while offering more front-pocket utility than most. Priced at $180 AUD, it sits in the upper-mid tier of the market. It is UTMB/ITRA compliant, meaning it meets all mandatory equipment volume requirements for global ultra races. The kit includes two 500ml soft flasks in the front, but note that the bladder sleeve is sold separately.

· Key Features

SensiFit 2.0 Harness System – Salomon’s updated fit uses a continuous 4-way stretch fabric that conforms to your torso without pressure points. The front straps are adjustable via dual cinch cords, allowing micro-adjustments mid-run.

6 Front Pockets – Two deep stretch-mesh flask pockets sit on the chest. Above each flask pocket is a smaller stretch pocket for gels (fits up to 4–5 gels per side). Two additional stow pockets sit near the sternum—one zippered for valuables, one open for quick-access trash.

12L Main Compartment – The rear volume opens via a full-length zipper. Internal organization includes a hydration sleeve (up to 2L bladder) and two open drop pockets for layers or food. The main roll-top closure provides extra expandability for mandatory gear layers.

Dual Pole Storage – Quick-stow loops on the front shoulder straps (for poles up to 130cm) and a rear loop system for trekking poles. It’s not the fastest system (requires two hands for front carry), but it is secure.

Breathable Mesh Panels – The back panel uses perforated 3D mesh to wick moisture and allow airflow. The shoulder straps are laser-cut and ventilated to dump heat.

· On the Trail

I tested the ADV Skin 12 over a 50km training run in the Dandenong Ranges (Victoria, Australia) with 1,400m of elevation gain, plus a 3-hour night run. The vest weighed 195g empty, then loaded with 1L of water (two soft flasks), 6 gels, a wind jacket, phone (iPhone 15 Pro Max), keys, and a power bank—total weight roughly 1.8kg.

Fit and Stability: The SensiFit 2.0 system is among the best I’ve used. Once adjusted, the vest felt like a second layer—no bounce, no chafing. The front cinch cords are easy to pull with one hand, even when sweaty. The low-profile design means you forget you’re wearing it.

Hydration Access: The 500ml soft flasks slide into the front pockets easily and sit snugly—no bottle popping out during steep downhills. The angled flask orientation reduces sloshing. I could drink without looking down, which is critical at race pace.

Storage Efficiency: The 6 front pockets swallow 10+ gels in total. The zippered front pocket fits a phone (though it’s tight with a large phone case—use a standard case). The rear main compartment holds a full mandatory gear kit including: jacket, long sleeve, hat, buff, headlamp, and a 1.5L bladder. The roll-top compresses the load for a lower center of gravity.

Pole Stowage: Front carry works for short poles, but rear loops are slower—patience required.

Downside: The vest lacks a dedicated whistle in the chest clip (a small miss for race compliance). Also, the included flasks are non-insulated—expect cold water to warm quickly in summer.

· Who It's For

The Salomon ADV Skin 12 is built for serious trail runners who regularly tackle 50km+ runs, stage races, or self-supported ultramarathons. It suits runners who prioritize carrying capacity without sacrificing pocket access. If you’re a minimalist runner doing 10–20km runs, you’ll find it overbuilt; a 5L vest (like the Salomon ADV Skin 5) is more appropriate. Likewise, if you need a full hydration bladder and gear for multi-day events, the 12L is ideal.

Ideal User Profile:

  • +Ultra runner (50km–100m+)
  • +Weight-conscious (sub-200g vest)
  • +Wants UTMB/ITRA compliance out of the box
  • +Prefers soft flask front carry over rear bladder

· Verdict (RGDB score: 9.2/10)

The Salomon ADV Skin 12 is nearly perfect for ultra-distance runners. It delivers industry-leading pocket accessibility, a secure no-bounce fit, and a 195g weight that is remarkable for

I swapped out my ADV 5 for a 12 a few weeks ago, absolutely worth it. Just ran 11 trail mile this morning in the pissing rain, having so many pockets, able to stash a jacket, and room for plenty of snacks was great. Definitely recommend the 12, I plan to use it for a 50k and a 50 miler coming up.

I have tried a few and I'd honestly say just get the Salomon and move on. Its the standard for a reason.

+1 for Salomon ADV Skin 12. Zero issues on my last 71 mile route. The right sizing is a snug fit WHEN ITS LOADED WITH WATER, FUEL, AND GEAR not when it is a snug fit when empty. The biggest mistake is ordering too large a vest and it is either bouncing or you are getting friction burns.
